A few weeks ago, as I was browsing Facebook, I can across a post about Fireball Whiskey. They made a statement that their whiskey was "safe" to drink and the recall on their product was only in Europe. The reason for the recall was that the company accidentally shipped their North American Fireball whiskey to Europe instead of the safer version they sell there. The difference in the two products is the ingredient propylene glycol. The reason this item was recalled in Europe is because propylene glycol is not believed to be safe for human consumption in European countries. It can cause skin irritation, problems with kidney function, and also respiratory issues. It is used in anti-freeze. I remember when our cat drank some anti-freeze and we had to put him to sleep because his kidney's shut down. I am not saying consuming this stuff will affect you right away and maybe you will even get away without any affect, but overtime consuming all these harmful chemicals will likely have an affect.
My question is, why are companies still selling American's products with questionable ingredients when they have already developed a safer alternative for other countries? And why are we okay with this? When will we wake up and demand better for ourselves and our children? When will we demand companies have more integrity? I know it is all about the bottom dollar for business but I believe they should still care about the well being of their consumers.
I know that I can avoid these products that have unsafe ingredients in them, and trust me I try. That is not the point. It is the fact that companies make safer alternatives for other countries yet still sell us the other product.
There is a lot of debate over the safety of some chemicals and the age old argument I hear all the time is, "I ate this stuff growing up and I turned out fine." But are we really fine? Are we at the prime of our health? I look at how many medications our parents and grandparents take. Is that what we have to look forward to? Is that the way it has to be?
What about the increase in obesity, diabetics, autism, cancer? I have read that our generation is the first generation in a long time who are not expected to live longer than their parents? What? With all the medical advances we have now days; how is that possible?
