Did you know that not only do chickens provide you with fresh eggs but they also eat ticks?
That was a huge selling point for me! I hate ticks! Once I learned that chickens eat ticks, I wanted them right away. Living with my in laws we have plenty of room to allow our chickens to free range so we just needed to build a coop and obtain the chickens.
I did a lot of research on different chicken coops but eventually decided on one based on how it looked, silly I know. I showed J the picture of it and because I have a wonderfully talented husband he was able to draw out plans for our coop just from looking at the picture.
We purchased lumber from our local hardware store which was more expensive than traveling 45 minutes to get the lumber from Home Depot or Menards, but much more convenient. The shingles for the roof and the siding we got free from relatives. The windows J removed from an old camper. The total cost to build our chicken coop came to around $500. J did all the labor himself. It took him about 4 days to complete working a few hours a day.

Bug and Ace had lots of fun playing in the coop while J built it.
I love our coop, maybe even more because J built it himself. We got chickens the day it was complete from a dear friend. We started with ten chickens, seven months later we still have eight chickens. Two died from unknown causes pretty soon after we got them.
Chickens are my absolute favorite animal ever now. I couldn't imagine not having chickens. I was so excited when I discovered the first egg in the coop. Throughout the summer, we would get anywhere from 6-10 eggs a day. Now that the weather is starting to get cold we only get about 1-2 a day.
We plan on getting a rooster and hatching our own chicks soon. We would someday like to have 30 or more chickens!

Our first eggs!
Would you ever consider getting your own chickens? If not, what is stopping you?
